Dalmatia (Croatia)

Late in starting travels this year but plenty organised for rest of year.
Here we are again back on the beautiful Adriatic coast -- this time much further south in Dalmatia. The coastline is lovely with hundreds of islands :-

Image

Its hot and sunny with temps around 30 C ( 86 F) but a gentle sea breeze to keep it pleasant.

And here we approach the pretty little island of Brac :-

Image

The clarity & blueness of the water is breathtaking and there is an incredible variety (and abundance) of fish.

Further round the bay is one of the most beautiful mausoleums/cemeteries I`ve ever seen :-

Its right on the corner of the island looking over the Adriatic.
What a resting place !

Cheers W.W. . The weather conditions & the colour of the water make it easy.
Split is built in, on & around the ruins of a huge palace built by the emperor Diocletian some 1700 years ago :-

Thanks Katt. I enjoy sharing them.
There appears to be little or no planning regulations in Croatia.Nevertheless this has resulted in quite a quaint mix of old & new :-

Image

At least it means that the general public get to enjoy the atmosphere of the old palace remains rather than a few priveleged.

Yes D.B. Swimming in the Adriatic is great.Water temp is 22 C and the quantities and variety of fish is fantastic :-

Image

I dont know if you`re old enough to remember Jacques Cousteau but he used to reckon that the Adriatic was one of the best sea-beds in the world for under water filmimg.
I only wish I had an under-water camera to capture the more colourful & exotic species which I swam amongst in deeper waters. This is the best I could manage from the shore :-

Here`s just a few of the early morning catch at the local fish market just a few metres away from the shore :-

Image

This small area of sea front is ideal for a fish market . Its quite unique for its complete absence of flies (even at today`s temp of 30 c ). The reason being that the Marjan hill on the edge of town was once volcanic and sulpurous fumes trapped beneath the surface are still slowly permeating their way through. Flies cannot tolerate sulphur.

Split looks a lot better in sunshine than it does in the rain! It was one of the few rainy days of my holiday in Croatia, when we decided to visit that fasinating city.

This area is also one of the best I`ve come across for interesting & pretty little passages and alleys :-

Image

Obviously I took this pic in daylight but they make a lovely stroll in the evening when the temp is still 26 - 28 C and the tables & chairs appear along with diners and local singers.

The old & the new.

Anyone remember the Yugo ?

Image

It was hoped to become the people`s car in Yugoslavia just as the VW was in Germany. Unfortunately despite its ridiculously cheap price ,the vast majority of Yugoslavians couldn`t afford one and most of the production was exported to the U.S..
Millions were sold & there were waiting lists to get one ---- until they realised what an unreliable car it was !

In Dalmatia now the most popular means of transport is the scooter and the fashion seems to be two wheels at the front :-

Despite its beauty,Croatia still bears some of the scars from the recent wars. Some abandoned villages are still out of bounds as they haven`t yet been cleared of mines & booby traps. In fact the husband of our hostesss was a bomb disposal expert who`d been injured twice recently in the line of duty.
However, the country must be a developer`s dream. There are so many abandoned houses & villas in some lovely locations :-

And now on to the highlight of our tours --- a journey up the Krka canyons.
An early morning start,a long bus ride up the Adriatic coast, than a hairy ride on a dilapidated old local bus up into the mountains & then on to find a boat to take us further up Krka :-

Image

As we wind our way further upstream, the trees all around get thicker & more lush and we spot the first burst of water gushing through them :-

Eventually whichever direction you look there is water gushing through (and sometimes over) the trees and the boat can go no further :-

Image

To proceed further up the canyon means a long but spectacular walk up,around & sometimes in & out of the waterfalls.Within a few metres you can walk from deafening, gushing water to beautiful tranquility :-

A man after my own heart, Ken. I love getting to out of the way places and seeing the traditional side of the places. I'll be up in Shildon in a few weeks time and can't wait to get to Bruss and Tunnel Top!!
Seriously, I love to see your pictures and always look forward to the next instalment of Ken's Postcards!

All the best,

Graham

Many thanks Katt,Kristof & Graham. It makes it worth the effort when others enjoy.
Its hard to imagine that within metres of this tranquil scene are many waterfalls crashing through the trees ---each bigger than High Force :-

Image

There are dragonflies & damselflies in abundance as well. It was difficult to photo them though as they wouldn`t stay still enough for me to take a pic. This is about the best I could achieve :-

I love those photos of the waterfalls and the one of the Dragonfly is brilliant. You have done very well because all the dragonflys I have ever seen have moved far too quickly to take a photo so well done.

Great photos, its looks a lovley place, its such a shame about the villas being dilapitated because of the war, such a waste.

Prices are good. Several people have asked me to do a summary on these places & make recommendations. I would certainly recommend Croatia.
A beautiful country with a lovely coastline facing the clear blue Adtriatic sea.
A pint will cost you anything between £1.60 and £2.40 in a restaurant. A good meal for two including a round of drinks and a tip about £22. A take-away pizza £1.25 .A good ice-cream (with an incredible choice of exotic varieties) 75p. A decent bottle of Dalmatian wine from £2 a bottle.
A boat trip to one of the many islands £2.50. The people are friendly and helpful and you can get a flight from Newcastle for £29 base fare.
